Korean Poet: Yun Dong-Ju
"Korean Poet Yun Dong-Ju"
Blog by: Angela Kim
Yun loaded his pride and love towards his nation in his posthumously published collection of poems Sky, Wind and Stars. Yun’s poems and watercolour paints seem to reconcile with one another as “his poems sing of his love for his people, his compassion for the poor and destitute, and his hopes for freedom and independence of South Korea from the harsh Japanese colonial era” (Sky, Wind and Stars, 2003). Furthermore, the soft usage of watercolour paints, including both light and dark tone of colours, enriches the concept of the utmost purity, delicacy, beauty, and sincerity in my own version of the collection of Yun’s poems.
I used an English version of Yun’s poetry book translated as Sky, Wind, and Stars by Kyung-Nyun Kim Richards and Steffen F. Richards. In Korea, the book is originally titled “하늘과 바람과 별과 시.”
Today, I would like to share my illustrations project with you. All the drawings that I’ve done for each poem are done with watercolour paints.
