KCC Korean Language Program & TOPIK FAQ

If you cannot find an answer to your question below, please email us at kcckoreancourses1@gmail.com

[Registration/Course]

Who can register for the Korean Language Program?

➢︎ KCC's Korean Language Program is for those interested in learning Korean and currently living in Canada.

I don't live in Canada but can I still register for the course?

➢︎ No. Unfortunately, our Korean Language Program is only available for those living in Canada. To see if your country of residence has KCC, please visit the KOCIS website for more information. (https://www.kocis.go.kr/eng/openInformation.do)

Are there any prerequisite course(s) I need to take or a mandatory placement test?

➢︎ Anyone can register for a course, and you can start at any level (depending on your current Korean skills). Although there are no mandatory placement tests, if you would like, you can do an online level test to see which level fits you the best. (https://nuri.iksi.or.kr/front/page/participation/onlineLevelTest/main.do)

Which course should I register for?

➢︎ Please review the textbook and see which level fits you the best. (https://nuri.iksi.or.kr/front/cms/contents/layout2/learningsejong2022/contentsList.do

What do the numbers and alphabets in a course code represent?

➢︎ The number that begins the course code represents a level. The higher the number is, the more advanced the course will be. The alphabet, A or B in the course code, represents which part of the textbook it will cover. For instance, 1A will cover the first half of the textbook, and 1B will cover the second half. The number in brackets represents different classes of the same course. Due to the higher volume of interest in certain courses, we offer numerous classes of the same course. In other words, courses 1A(1) and 1A(2) are the same courses but offered on different days to meet the demands of the registrants. If you are unsure which course you should register for, please refer to the above answers to the guidance.

This semester does not offer a course I am interested in. Can you offer this course? / Can you offer in-person classes for the courses currently offered online? / Can I suggest a course?

➢︎ No. The courses we offer every semester are based on the registrants' interests and the instructors' availabilities.

How do I sign up for a course?

➢︎ You can sign up for a course by submitting a Google form. For more information, please check the semester's page.

The registration has already started, but the Google form is now closed. Can I still register?

➢︎ No. Unless otherwise stated, if the Google form is closed, it means no registration will be accepted.

I tried registering last semester but did not get in. Can my previous registration be carried over to the new semester?

➢︎ No. The registration and waitlist are only valid for that semester. We do not carry over to a subsequent semester to ensure everybody has equal chances of getting in.

Do you offer a Korean Language Program for children?

➢︎ We do not have a separate Korean Language Program for the children. Although our program does not have age restrictions, most students tend to be adults. You can register for your children, but we strongly recommend having a guardian present during class time for assistance.

I will not be able to attend a class or two. Can you provide me with a recording of the online class?

➢︎ No. We do not record our online classes due to privacy concerns. For any missed class materials, please contact your instructors.

I understand the class will begin at 5:30 pm, but which time zone is that?

➢︎ KCC Canada is in Ottawa, Canada, so the time specified on our website is based on Eastern Time (ET).

I registered for the wrong class. Can I make a switch?

➢︎ No. To provide equal opportunity for everyone, each registration is valid for that course and semester only. If you wish to register for a different course, you must submit another form. To avoid this from happening, please review the textbook before registering and double-check your registration form before submitting.

I registered for a course but did not receive a confirmation email yet.

➢︎ If you did not receive a confirmation email from us, it means we are not able to offer you a spot in the class at the moment. However, you are automatically on the waitlist. When a spot opens up, we will let you know, so please check your email frequently, especially near the start of the semester.

I registered as soon as the registration started but have not received a confirmation email. Are you sure you received my registration?

➢︎ Yes. We are simply unable to offer you a spot due to the high volume of registrations we receive each semester. You can email us to inquire about it, but please note our response will be slower than usual.

I wish to register for other courses in case my first choice becomes full. Is this possible? If so, how can I do that?

➢︎ Suppose you are interested in other courses, i.e., the same course offered on different days, different courses, etc. In that case, you can submit another registration form. Unlike previous semesters, the registration form will not ask you to list any other course(s) you are interested in. Therefore, you must submit another form if you are interested in registering for more than one course.

I want to register for the next semester. Will you be offering courses in the next semester? If so, when will it start?

➢︎ KCC's Korean Language Program offers 3 semesters every year. 1. Winter Semester (January-April), 2. Spring/Summer Semester (May-July), and 3. Fall Semester (September-December). More information about each semester will become available approximately 3-4 weeks before the semester starts, so please check our website regularly.

Is there a minimum attendance policy?

➢︎ Yes. If a student misses more than 3 classes out of 12 total sessions, they will be immediately excluded from the course and will not be allowed to register for the next semester.

Do you issue a Certificate of Completion?

➢︎ Yes. We can issue a Certificate of Completion if you attended at least ten sessions.

[Textbooks]

Which textbook will each course be using?

➢︎ Please look at the table below. Please note course codes and textbooks course are not the same, as they represent different things. Courses with course code A will cover the first half of the textbook, and the courses with course code B will cover the second half. (i.e., Sejong Korean course 1A will cover the first half of the Sejong Korean 1A textbook, and Sejong Korean Course 1B will cover the second half of the Sejong Korean 1A textbook.
