[2022 Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) Special Program] Zoomchi Pouch and Wallet Making Workshop

Aug 17, 2022 | 492 Hit

In celebration of 2022 Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day), the Korean Cultural Centre hosts a Korean traditional hanji craft workshop, 'Zoomchi Pouch & Wallet Making Workshop'.

Chuseok is two of Korea's most celebrated traditional holidays, along with Seollal, Lunar New Year's Day. Traditionally, during this holiday, Koreans expressed gratitude to their ancestors by serving the first crops at the ancestor's altar. They also kept a handful of  prematured rice (olbyeo) harvest in pouches and hung them on the pillars or front gates, wishing for a good harvest next year. This custom was called "Sharing olbyeosimni."

Koreans also celebrated their year-long hard work and abundant harvest by sharing the produces with their loved ones on Chuseok. Hanji pouches were often used for such sharing.

As one of the many hanji craft techniques, 'zoomchi hanji' is made by wetting several layers of hanji with water, then crumpling and drying them. Hanji has the characteristics to become stronger and tougher by using such a process, and could even be used as an inner layer for armour during the wars in Joseon Dynasty (1392~1910).

To highlight the Chuseok spirit of "No more, No less, be just it," we will also make traditional wallets using zoomchi hanji, praying for the good luck and fortune of our fellow Canadians.

This workshop will take a format of a two-day series, given the time necessary to dry hanji completely, after wetting and kneading repeatedly;

- 1st day:  zoomchi hanji making (Friday, September 9, at 19:30~21:00 EST)

- 2nd day: making pouches and long wallets using your own zoomchi hanji (date to be informed separately to the participants who took the first series)
