[2022 Korea Week] Dano Fan Making Workshop
Dano Fan Making Workshop
At the 2022 Korea Week festival, the KCC organizes <K-Craft: Dano Fan Making> workshop.
Dano is one of Korea's three most celebrated traditional holidays, with the Chuseok Mid-Autumn Festival in September/October and Seollal Lunar New Year's Day in January/February.
Corresponding to the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, this year's Dano falls on Friday, June 3. Traditionally, the Koreans believed that the day of Dano is filled with positive yang energy, so it was considered a day of decoration and to enjoy the coming summer. People would wash and put on new sets of clothes and ornaments.
Among the many traditional Dano customs, making and sharing Dano fans was one of the most popular activities during the Joseon Dynasty period. Members of the royal court would present the ruling monarch with a book of Dano poetry. The king, in turn, would give them special Dano fans made by artisans. Ordinary people also made fans on this day, using traditional hanji, and shared them with their families and neighbours praying for their good health over the hot summer.
We will decorate a clam-shaped hanji fan with dried flower leaves in this K-Craft: Dano Fan Making workshop.
