Beyond the Screen: Exploring the Art of Production Design in Korean Cinema

Poster for the 2026 Touring K-Arts exhibition Production Design: Scene Architects Build On-Screen Worlds, held at the Korean Cultural Centre Canada from October 28, 2026, to January 29, 2027. The design features a dark background with schematic drawings and arrows illustrating the filmmaking process.

The Korean Cultural Centre Canada (KCC) and the Korean Film Archive (KOFA) are pleased to present <Production Design: Scene Architects Build On-Screen Worlds>, on view from Wednesday, October 28, 2026, to Friday, January 29, 2027. The exhibition is presented as part of the Touring K-Arts Project, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and administered by the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE). Since its launch in Europe in 2024, the exhibition has travelled across Asia, Oceania, and Latin America before arriving in Ottawa, Canada.

<Production Design: Scene Architects Build On-Screen Worlds> explores the art of production design, the creative process of bringing cinematic worlds to life. Production design involves interpreting scripts and characters and shaping the visual elements of a film, from its historical setting and atmosphere to its spaces, sets, and props. Moving beyond the traditional focus on directors and actors, the exhibition highlights the creative contributions and artistic achievements of production designers who shape the visual worlds of cinema.

The exhibition features the works and creative processes of three leading Korean production designers: RYU Seong-hee, CHO Hwa-sung, and HAN Ah-rum. Through concept art, sketches, technical drawings, behind-the-scenes photographs, and 3D visualizations, visitors can explore how cinematic worlds take shape, from script and character analysis to concept development, spatial design, and set construction.

By revealing the creative processes behind familiar scenes from Korean films, the exhibition invites visitors to experience cinema from a new perspective and discover the artistry, imagination, and craftsmanship of production designers who have played a vital role in shaping the visual identity of Korean cinema.
