Park Hyesoo 박혜수 

Park Hyesoo (b. 1974) focuses on the concept of what society accepts as “universal.” Words such as “ordinary,” “us,” “family,” and “loss” seem commonplace and are routinely used in everyday life, yet beneath their familiar surfaces lies a margin of interpretation that can be subtly twisted or expanded at any time, depending on who writes these words and who reads them. The artist explores precisely these delicate gaps—the points at which meaning wavers and splits apart—to slowly unfurl linguistic distances and then unsettle them again with meticulous precision. Through this process, the audience is confronted with the blind spots of the collective that are often concealed beneath the idea of normality.

<A place for anybody and somebody> consists of installation objects along with a video documenting a lecture-performance program presented at Korea Artist Prize 2019 at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea. In this experimental performance, the artist poses a question to visitors: “On a 10-hour flight, to whom would you give the seat next to you?” The installation objects represent the seats of the “somebody” and the “anybody” directly chosen by the audience, revealing the invisible distance between oneself and others, as well as the boundaries of relationships. It prompts us to consider who exactly is included in the word “Us” and how far that sense of our distance extends.
