The Great Korean Cook-Off: Canada Edition

will invite Top Chefs from Ottawa to Compete for the Culinary Tour in Korea


Proudly brought to you by the Korean Cultural Centre (KCC, Affiliated Organization of the Embassy of Republic of Korea), in partnership with the Korean Food Promotion Institute (KFPI), the 2018 Hansik Contest <The Great Korean Cook-Off: Canada Edition> will bring together some of the most recognizable chefs in Ottawa to compete for more than just bragging rights as the best Korean food chef in town!

 

The Hansik Contest will invite 6 non-Korean chefs in the National Capital Region to showcase their best interpretation of Korean cuisine and compete for 2 spots in the Final Round, to be held at the Korean Culture Fair, taking place on Saturday June 23rd 11:00am, at the KCC (150 Elgin Street, Ottawa, Ontario). The ultimate winner will be given a plane ticket to Korea for a culinary tour package, in addition to a $1,500 cash prize!

 

The first contest of its kind in Canada, the winner of the 2018 Hansik Contest will be announced and presented at the Korean Culture Fair by His Excellency Maengho Shin, the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to Canada.

 

Chef Contestants and Preliminary Round Details

 

Here are the participating Chef Contestants for the 2018 Hansik Contest <The Great Korean Cook-Off: Canada Edition> (In alphabetical order):

 

-       Harriett Clooney, Beechwood Gastropub

-       Josh Gillard, Amuse

-       Michael Lasalle, Canadian Museum of History

-       Marc Lepine, Atelier Restaurant

-       Jamie Stunt, Dish catering

-       Jon Svazas, Fauna

 

For the preliminary round of the contest, the chef contestants will be given a chance to recreate their favourite Korean dish within an hour in the comfort of their own kitchens. A panel of judges (Minister of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Director of the KCC, Korean Chef Representative) representing Korea will visit their kitchens to judge their Korean dishes.

 

Using criteria such as taste composition, presentation, originality, and evidence of passion for Korean food, the panel of judges will ultimately select 2 chefs to compete in the final round to be held during the Korean Culture Fair on Saturday June 23rd, at the KCC on 150 Elgin Street, Ottawa.

 

Final Round

For the final round, the Top 2 chefs will prepare bite-sized samples of their Korean food creations and introduce them to 50 selected public at the Korean Culture Fair. The final decision will be made by the 50 selected publics through a popular vote, and the final winner will be presented by the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea. 

 

Prizes

The Winner – Invitation to Korea for a 3-day trip, in addition to a $1,500 cash prize

2nd place – $800 cash

 

With exciting activities planned alongside the Hansik Contest, the Korean Culture Fair promises to be a day filled with endless fun and enjoyment as the KCC brings Korean culture to the heart – and palate – of Canada.
