The second video 「KIM Whanki, Two Moons (1961)」, led by PARK Mi-hwa, Head of Exhibition Department 2 at MMCA, explores KIM Whanki’s art world which embraces experimental art from the West while connecting inner values with Korean traditions.

About the artists:

PARK Su-guen(1914-1965) :

PARK is a self-taught artist who cultivated his own world of art, despite all the hardship of poverty and the Korean war. As one of the greatest artists of the 20th century Korea, he strived to capture the beauty of truth in his era establishing truthfulness and simplicity as a foundation of his art. At the same time, his art consistently reveals distinctly original form of Korean traditional sense of beauty.

KIM Whanki (1913-1974) :

Having studied in Tokyo and Paris, with exhibitions in Paris, New York, Tokyo and Sao Paulo, KIM is one of the greatest Korean-born artists to be recognized internationally. He also contributed greatly to the birth of Korean abstract art. While characterized by drastic simplification and geometrical transformation of subjects, his work always portrays Korea’s tractional beauty and emotional sentiment of nature.
